The Standord Experiment.

Hi everyone

Im going to post a video documentary on an experiment done in the 60's. Which later became very controversial and interesting and also lead to influence a hollywood film, which has a comment on how post modernism is self referencing.

This could also apply to discourse of discipline and mob mentality within or contrasting to post modernism as suggested to me by Gareth.

The Stanford Experiment. Please take the time to watch.

  1. So like the graduates people in a postmodern society almost play up to what they labeled as? Eg through social media etc?

The Stanford experiment has also come under fire in recent years because...

It couldn't mimic prison eniviroment exactly

The subjects were mostly middle class and male

However zimbardo has pointed out that this can be related to real events?

((Video stopped working halfway through sorry if its repeating what it says))

  2. oh yes I learnt about this in psychology
and how the people playing the role of the guards actually started to have 'sadistic tendencies' and liked the power they gained. The prisoners actually started to believe they were suffering too. However, that was criticised because they were only role-playing and basing their behaviour on how they were expected to behave and modelling it on stereotypes of prisoners and guards ,like Cat stated, that they had seen through the media. But, Zimbardo claimed that the participants started off by role-playing although after a while they started to internalise the roles, actually believing they were who they were portraying.
So, in relation to postmodernism, because the participants had seen through social media how prisoners and guards behave, they repeated those actions in the experiment and reenacted what they knew about that environment and situation.

  4. What you have to remember is that media had a small part to play or at least a very stereotyped view as this was the 50's, so it may be true they where role playing and mimicing what they thought they should do.

It also has more relevance to Postmodernism as it has been made into a Hollywood film, a re-hash or homage, which is common in Postmodernism media, fashion, fine art and design
